Defusing tension in Harehills
The Guardian | Robyn Vinter North of England correspondent | Fri 19 Jul 2024
In July 2024, unrest shook the Leeds neighbourhood of Harehills after children were removed from a Roma family — a decision that triggered widespread protest and sparked tensions between residents and police. Amid the chaos, one figure stood out for his calm, courageous presence: Green Party councillor Mothin Ali.
As The Guardian reports, Ali worked to defuse tensions on the ground. He spoke with community members, discouraged escalation, and physically intervened to prevent harm. Witnesses recall him urging peace and protecting vulnerable people on both sides of the confrontation.
Ali’s actions reflect a deep commitment to his community — not just as an elected representative, but as a trusted neighbour. His efforts helped prevent further violence at a time when misinformation and hostility were spreading quickly.
“When things fall apart, we need people who show up — not for attention, but for each other.”
