Mothin Ali elected co-deputy leader of the Green Party

Hyphen Online - By Aisha Rimi, Reporter – 2 September 2025

Hyphen reports that Mothin Ali, Leeds councillor for Gipton and Harehills, has been elected co-deputy leader of the Green Party, winning 33.5% of first-preference votes. Ali becomes the only Muslim currently serving in a leadership role within a mainstream political party in England and Wales.

The article highlights Ali’s role as a peacemaker during the 2024 Harehills unrest, and his campaign to shift the Greens away from a “middle-class, southern-focused” image by championing working-class inclusion, renationalisation of key services, and better representation of diverse northern communities.

Ali warned of the rise of the far right, urging minority groups to unite: “Our fight is one. We’ve got to come together and make sure we’re ready to challenge Reform and the far right.”
