Mothin Ali’s Courage in Harehills

In July 2024, during tense scenes in Harehills following the removal of Roma children by social services, newly elected Green Party councillor Mothin Ali stepped in to de-escalate violence and protect his community. As covered by The Independent, Mothin formed a human shield between police and protestors, tried to extinguish fires, and called for calm.

Despite these efforts, he became the target of far-right smears accusing him of inciting the unrest — a claim firmly denied by eyewitnesses and disproven by his actions. In the weeks that followed, Mothin faced harassment and threats, but remained committed to peace and justice.
